How to choose the right wall art size
How to choose the right wall art size
Any designer will tell you that adding wall art to your home décor can enrich your house with color and style and will usually become an eye-catching focal point in a space, whether it's a one-of-a-kind original painting, a framed print, a canvas print, or photographs.
The process of establishing the right size and location of new artwork can be overwhelming at times. When the size of a piece of art isn't suitable, it can feel out of place in your space. "What size painting should I buy for my wall?" is a common concern that many people have when planning their art purchase, and we, as an art selling company: ALUXEM, wants to help. Here's a guide to determining what size of wall art will be ideal for your space, to make the decision-making process a little easier and, more importantly, enjoyable!
When I see a wonderful photo from a homeowner showing a painting hanging in their space, there is one decorating blunder that I see every now and then. It's because individuals frequently select wall art that is far too small for the space! If you're going to invest in art, you don't want to buy it, hang it, and then realize your room is still empty. Consider the amount of furniture in the room; if it is minimal, a huge piece of artwork will fill the visual field as effectively as furniture.
Of course, you'll think about the wall, and you'll probably measure it once or twice, but what will you do after that? You must consider two factors here: first, the total dimensions of the wall, and second, the position. Horizontal wall spaces (typically seen over sofas, in a hallway) work well with landscape-oriented artwork, but tall, narrow walls work best with art of a similar shape, made in a portrait, or vertical orientation. When it comes to the overall measurements of the wall, your artwork should take up 60 percent to 75 percent of the available wall space.
Start by measuring your wall's width and height, then multiplying them by 0.60 or 0.75. This will provide you with a selection of sizes that will 95% of the time work. For example: If you have a blank wall available above your sofa. Your sofa is 3 meters wide and the empty space above your sofa is 2 meters in height. Multiply 300 cm by 0.6 = (180cm) and multiply 200 cm by 0.6 = (120cm). The safe size would be a piece of artwork that is 180 by 120 centimeters. Of course, it doesn't have to be exact, but if in doubt, remember that little math rule!
Extra note: Examine your ceilings. Are the ceilings high, massive, lofty, allowing for a grand artwork, or low, allowing for a smaller artwork height and landscape orientation? Just remember, if you want to be safe, go big! This is especially true when purchasing modern artwork; in order to make the most impact, bigger is always superior.
When hanging over furniture such as a sofa, table, or fireplace mantle, follow this rule of thumb: The artwork should be three-quarters the width of the furniture and hung 15 to 30 centimeters above the top. It's that simple! Of course, it doesn't have to be exact; an off-center piece can add a lot of visual interest to a wall, but if in doubt, remember this rule as well!
When you're drawn to more than one artwork by the same artist, or when you find various prints or paintings in the same color palette and you'd like to arrange them together, trilogy set walls are a fun, eye-catching way to fill a large space. You can combine wall art that is all the same size together, or you can generate genuine visual intrigue by grouping art of varied sizes in one of the many gallery layouts available online.
In a typical room, the appropriate height and width measurements are 60 by 90 centimeters as a trilogy set of three. This would be a wall consisting of three pieces placed next to each other with almost a total width of 2 meters and a height of 90 cm. Use artwork of the same size and place them in symmetry to create an amazing eye-catching impact on your wall. Trilogy set artworks look lovely in the living room, hallway, and even above a bathtub. Leave some empty space between the artwork to make the arrangement look more clean and appealing.
Point of view
Art that has been hung much too high is a common error to art that is too small for the wall. When deciding on the amount of art to purchase, keep in mind that the center point of any work of art should be at eye level. (Use the typical 1.70 cm person as a guideline if you're very short or very tall.) Don't be frightened to fill that empty spot!
Art, especially original art, is a long-term investment that can make or break a room and is necessary for a polished look. Now for the fun part... go out and explore our artwork collections, and have a great time choosing a beautiful piece of art that is perfect for your home!
In your hallway, large wall art measuring 80 by 120 centimeter in height and width can provide a polished, traditional impression. This size of wall art looks well in stairways or above your entertainment center.
Perfect above a small sofa
Above a standard to small sofa in the living room, an artwork measuring 120 by 80 centimeter in height and width looks fantastic. Also, consider the height at which you intend to hang the artwork. In general, the middle of the artwork should be at eye level for an appealing look. To give it some breathing room, hang it between 15 and 30 centimeters above the couch. Don’t be afraid to choose an even bigger art measurement if your sofa is very big. Like an art measurement of 150 by 100 centimeter, or 180 by 120 centimeter.
Go big or go home
For a hugely large blank wall, and you're looking for something really dramatic and big. We got you! Choose super-sized wall art that measures 180 in height and width by 120 centimeters in width. This is the appropriate size artwork if you want to cover the full wall above your couch, bed or hallway. It adds a premium element to your area while making it look an absolute statement.
We hope you find this sizing guide to be pretty helpful when selecting wall art. Now that you've got this handy guide, you can go out and buy some fun, appealing, and exciting artwork!
